What is an RAO?
RAO stands for "Room Activity Organizer". A room activity organizer is every teacher's biggest helper. As a room parent, you will act as a liaison between teachers, panther parents' leadership, and other parents to ensure the school year activities are as organized and as much fun as possible. These volunteers will execute this through teacher appreciation lunches, holiday class parties, and other grade specific special dates throughout the school year. Responsibilities of an RAO?
It's crucial that you're informed about the essential roles you fulfill as an RAO. If you're hesitant about committing to such a significant role, you may want to consider taking on a smaller -- but equally vital -- responsibility. For example, you could assist with a specific party, aid in organizing the main event class gift, or volunteer to help plan, set up, and take down your grade's teacher lunch. There are so many ways to get involved! The responsibilities included to be an RAO are as follows...
- Class Parties: Classroom parties for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day will be organized and overseen by the RAO. As the organizer, you'll be responsible for creating an agenda and sharing it with the other classroom parent to ensure the parties are consistent across classrooms. You’ll also need to communicate your plans with the teacher, so they are informed, and coordinate with the RAO to keep everyone aligned for the day. Typical parties include a snack, some games, a craft, and similar activities. Teachers may request certain restrictions, such as avoiding projects that involve glue or glitter. Additionally, be mindful of any allergies present in your class when planning. To facilitate donations for the party, you'll set up a Signup Genius for your class. Each class is allotted a budget per student, but this funding generally won’t cover all costs for the full school year, so parent contributions are encouraged.
- Teacher Lunch: Once a year, your grade will be responsible for hosting a teacher luncheon. The date for your luncheon will be provided in your introduction packet, which you'll receive via email after your selection. To organize the event, you’ll need to use a Signup Genius to gather donations or ask each student to contribute financially toward a catered lunch. You will also need a team of volunteers to help coordinate the setup and cleanup after the luncheon is over.
- Grade Specific Dates: Certain grade levels have events that are specifically organized through the RAOs. Examples include the Kindergarten Thanksgiving celebration, the Second Grade First Communion brunch, and the Eighth-Grade brunch.
